4 Cool Gadgets to Ease Traveling with Your Special Needs Child

Safety is always on our mind at Abram’s Nation. Plans for spring break and summer trips are beginning this time of year, and your special needs child may have some unique needs during travel.

Here are a couple of really cool gadgets that may suit you and your child’s travel needs.

 

GPS SmartSole

This insole device tracks individuals who may wander. The GPS SmartSole is an invisible, wearable device intended to allow easy monitoring for individuals with such diagnosis as Alzheimer’s, Autism, or traumatic brain injuries.

"The miniaturized GPS/Cellular device is built into an insole designed to be worn in shoes, providing tracking and monitoring for the individual while giving complete peace of mind to the parent who can easily monitor the connected insole right from a mobile app.

This technology is a boon for the special needs community, especially the parents and family members that are familiar with the wandering and elopement of those with cognitive impairments.

Fidget Toys

Everyone should probably pack one of these during long trips. According to the link posted below, “Fidget toys are self-regulation tools to help with focus, attention, calming, and active listening.” Great for restless children and those of us with short attention spans.

"In addition to research confirming the importance of movement and sensory input while learning, learning is enhanced when fidgets are introduced, as documented through case studies and a comprehensive understanding of human cognition and student learning. One case study, conducted in a sixth grade classroom in Georgia, the positive effects of fidgets were well observed.

Academically, the students showed growth in scholastic achievement when the stress balls were implemented. The average writing score of the class increased from 73% without stress balls to 83% with the use of stress balls. In addition, the student with a medical diagnosis of ADHD showed the most progress with an increase of 27% on a writing sample (Stalvey & Brasell, 2006)."
